Hello, sorry I am a newbie to GIS. I've been looking for guides online but haven't been able to find one that was good. If someone could point me to a guide focused on my specific goal that would be great. I can't even figure out which free GIS software is best or capable of what I am trying to do.
Essentially my goal is to map a professional looking map which looks something like this http://boston.com/community/blogs/less_is_more/2010SpecialElectionMapMass.jpg I am not mapping an election, but I am mapping percentages so I would like to be able to vary color for all towns in New England and New York.
If someone could recommend a few trips to getting started that would be super helpful, thank you!
