I am not sure why you would want to use DTED for a project like this. Why not use NED, which is easily available. The problem in DTED Level 1 is the Orthometric Heights are relative to EGM-96 (Earth Gravity Model 1996), not any sort of local Mean Sea Level Datum. There could be feet difference beteen the two.
DTED Level 1, is made up of elevation postings ever 3" of Lat and Long. 3" is approx 300 feet on the ground. This will not make for a very dense model if you are trying to show elevation difference over a small area.
