REQUEST HELP from a human (that's me, folks) by sending mail to
owner-arcview@lists.directionsmag.com
* This list is for Arcview-related questions, answers, and
information. Other GIS products (ArcInfo, MapInfo, etc.) have their own
lists. See www.directionsmag.com/discussion for other active GIS lists.
* Anything that is constructive and potentially useful or
interesting to ArcView users and developers is welcome. Critical
questions and comments are quite acceptable provided they are politely
couched, factual, and succinct.
* All messages broadcast from this list will automatically have
"[AV]" prefixed to their subject lines. This enables you to filter all
list messages. See the help to your e-mail software for more
information; any e-mail program updated after 1998 should have such a
filtering feature (Eudora, Netscape, and Outlook definitely have it).
* To cut down on unnecessary traffic, please send your responses
to the original poster. If you have posted a question to the list, then
you are expected to post a summary of the useful responses (and maybe
even a few kudos for those who helped you) within a reasonable time.
Consider prefixing summaries with "SUM:". Make sure you repeat the
original inquiry, too, so people understand what question you are answering!
* Avoid the embarrassment of broadcasting a virus or unreadable
file: do not send attachments. If you feel a binary file is the only
means to communicate with the list, then consider posting it on the web
and providing its URL to the list instead.
* Do NOT open ANY attachment to a message sent from this list
unless (a) the message itself clearly mentions the attachment and
describes its contents; (b) it passes a scan from an up-to-date virus
checker, (c) you really, really want to see the attachment, and (d) you
don't mind catching a virus anyway.
* There is a searchable message archive. Go to
http://www.directionsmag.com/discussion/ to search messages posted after
April 2000. A chronological archive of 3000+ earlier messages dating to
August 1999 is available at http://www.listbot.com/cgi-bin/subscriber.
Select the ArcView discussion list and follow the "archives" link.
* You send messages to the list by including
arcview@lists.directionsmag.com in your address line. There is no
automatic confirmation, but your message will be redelivered to you at
the same time it is broadcast to the list. The broadcast delay usually
is five to 15 minutes at the most.
* Consider further qualifying your postings with a keyword such as
"AV 3.0", "TIP", "3D Analyst", etc., to help people quickly identify
which messages are of interest to them. You might get a more focused
response that way, too. This can help you when searching the archives.
(Don't know about the archives? Log in at listbot.com and link to the
"view archive" option.)
* If you have a question about the list itself, please e-mail it
directly to me (as the list owner) rather than the entire list. I
welcome your questions and suggestions.
