Subject: RE: GISList: Arcmap: ArcTool Box, ArcCatolog Running very slow
Date:  08/06/2001 09:05:04 AM
From:  Anthony Quartararo

I have found that running ArcGIS 8.1 (ArcView 8.1 with the new update)local
on a 1GHz P3 w/512Mb RAM Dell Latitude runs slooooowwwwwwwwww with many
layers (themes) loaded that are comprised of several data formats (raster
imagery, DWG, DGN, SHP). Refresh rates are slow, sometimes when a
particular layer is turned off or on, it is not "refreshed" at all, and
moving one layer on top of another doesn't always translate into it
"appearing" in its correct layer configuration (ie. either on top or 2nd, or
3rd, etc.) I don't even bother with ArcCatalog usually because it is
dreadfully slow to open especially with ArcGIS running.

I just hope ESRI is not heading down the same path as Microsoft, in that
creating a monster application that can only be "revised" by attaching yet
more modules, hooks, interfaces, etc. etc. into it, which in turn creates a
larger footprint, requires more RAM, CPU cycles and marginally if at all
improves user experience or functionality.

I doubt upgrading to a faster CPU will gain the performance desired,
however, depending on your business and what you need it for, gaining 10
seconds for every operation, over the course of the year may pay for itself
during the lifetime of the CPU, then again, maybe not.

I am experiencing a sluggish computer while using the ArcGIS products,
especially when opening the ArcMap or refreshing the map to redraw with an
air photo as a base map of a city.

I have a P3 800 MHz with a 512 ram bus, HP Vectra. Is anybody else
experiencing a sluggish computer using ArcGIS? Should I upgrade to a faster
processor?

Your suggestions would be great! :)
