Subject: Re: GISList: USA Surface Geology

From:  David Nealey

Diane, the portal into the National Geologic Map Database is:

http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/ngmdb/ngm_catalog.ora.html

Much of the central US's surficial geology was digitized by the National
Cooperative Geologic Mapping Team in Denver in the 90s. The project chief
was Jack Reed (retired), and David Moore and Chuck Bush were involved in the
project. You can contact David and Chuck through the USGS phone directory
to get the status of the data. When I left in 98, they had reached as far
west as the Rockies. Another project based out of Reston was digitizing the
geology at 1:100,000-scale.

Some of the states in the central part of the country have excellent GIS
staffs. Contact each staff's geologic survey. You may have to reproject
and edgematch those data in house.
