Dave,
In my point of view DXF format (R12) is the best
format what your CAD drawing supplier can give it to
you. As you can easily import the dxf into Mapinfo and
play a lot with it, like separate tables, preseve the
block details, attributes data, give the projection
information which u mentioned and can even do
transformation etc..
