Good point Bill, lots of people don't realize that there are a host of re-sellers or business partners (call them what you please) where users can purchase ESRI software or upgrades. It seems that lately most people seem to prefer to go directly to the vendor's website, particularly now that people can buy online. What many people aren't aware of is that resellers have a small margin that they can work with resulting on some pretty good savings for the consumer - what I mean here is that by shopping around you can save some serious $$.
What don't people know about this? Business partners aren't allowed to sell online, advertise their prices, or basically promote the fact that they are cheaper!
Keep in mind that US customers can only buy from US business partners/resellers: Canadians can only buy from Cdn partners, etc... Dr. Limp's referal of people to the ESRI site seems to be a common trend in people sending clients directly to the vendor... why? Beats me... especially when the price can be negotiated with bus. partners.
As for Neil's original question regarding different pricing for diff. users, I've never heard of this, although it may have to do with differing license agreements. The move to the ArcGIS platform seems to have complicated the licensing issue and I'm still trying to sort it our myself!
FYI: We are a re-seller and are glad to provide US customers with price quotes simply by sending a request to esripricing@geocomm.com. Other resellers can be found at the ESRI website if you prefer to deal with someone in your local area.
