Subject: GISList: SDTS DEMs Revisted...
Date:  08/16/2001 03:01:01 AM
From:  john stone

Its hard to understand the USGS sometimes...

First they promote the SDTS standard by easily giving
away the data (the whole idea behind the promotion of
the data)-- Then they make it difficult to get the
data -- so difficult that you have to pay a private
vendor for it.

For some reason I would rather pay the USGS directly
for the data than this private firm. This arrangement
does not seem politically correct to me -- I think
there needs to be a division between the private and
public sector -- I don't think we should pay tax money
so that the USGS can make SDTS data and then give it
exclusively to a private firm for free so that that
private firm can then sell it back to the tax payer --
The tax payer has already payed for this data -- Why
do we need to pay for it again? --

I'm suprised by the lack of outrage by the GIS
community here.. Yes 2.5KB/Sec is unbearable -- our
time is worth something -- I do not consider this data
being given away for free.. Not at these download
speeds. It was 60 times faster before (if using a T1
line).

Probably a waste of time to complain to a government
official -- But I'm sure if enough complained the USGS
would once again house the data in tandem with the
DataDepot. I don't think the data is any more than 20
Gig. Its not like any maintenance is involved in
providing it online. The data set is already
completed. The equipment is already purchased -- the
bandwidth is already there.

Or would that decrease the amount of sales/profit
going to the DataDepot -- Very much a conflict of
interest here... Isn't there like an Inspector
General office within the Federal Government to
investigate this type of stuff... Is this legal?

Does anyone care..
