Subject: Re: GISList: Relative Pathing/"Portable" Projects
Date:  08/29/2001 10:01:41 AM
From:  Pete Earls

Amin,

I have been pretty annoyed by this problem in the past because I would
work on the same project on different computers and thus had to work on
different drives and directories. I tried all the available scripts on
ESRI's ArcScripts web page a year or two ago and found the best option was
to use Project.Save at

http://gis.esri.com/arcscripts/details.cfm?CFGRIDKEY=-137862090

It's an Avenue script that replaces the absolute paths with relative
paths. It works great as long as all shapefiles and grids are in the same
directory as the project directory or in a subdirectory below the project
directory. It also backs up the full path version of the project into a
.abs file. After loading and compiling the script, change the name to
"Project.Save" to make it active when you click the Save icon on the
Arcview toolbar.

If your project uses extensions that do not come with ArcView, you can put
these in the project's directory and remove the path to the ArcView Ext32
directory at the top of the .apr file. I do this after I've initially
loaded the extension from the Ext32 directory to get the extension's name
into the .apr file.

Kudos to Joshua Lieberman for providing this script.

- Pete
