When you say farmland assessment, are you interested in gathering
info on active farm acreage or just the area zoned for farming? I do
know that the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly
known as the Soil Conservation Service) has used aerial orthophotos
and GIS to monitor crops, tilled areas and wetland conversions. They
have used a GIS application with the acronym of GRAS. They do not
use that data for tax purposes though. There should be a local or
regional office where they may be able to answer any technical
questions related to the GIS data.
