Stann (et al):
Our company includes an agricultural land assessment function as part of efiniti, our internet GIS application. We create a soil map (based on NRCS soil maps), land use map (based on Assessor data), and a parcel map (based on Auditor plat maps). After these maps are overlaid, a total acreage is calculated for each unique combination of soil and land use within a selected parcel.
To see this in use on one of our clients' sites, go to http://in56.b-l-n.com/map/index.html. If you've never visited a MapGuide site before, you may be asked to download a plug-in for internet explorer before you can view the map. Select the "zoom in" button from the toolbar and zoom to an unincorporated area on the map. If the parcel layer is not visible, keep zooming in until it appears. To see the layers we use to generate the overlay report, turn on the Landuse and Soils layers in the map legend by clicking in their checkboxes. To view the overlay report for a parcel, select the "arrow" tool from the toolbar and click in one of the larger parcels in the map. The parcel you selected should highlight in black. Now right-click in the map window, and select view > report from the popup menu. When the parcel information appears at the bottom of the screen, click on the link that says "Click Here for the Overlay Report". A separate window will open containing the overlay report. Click the link at the top of the table to save this report as an Excel spreadsheet.

Does anyone have information or examples of using GIS to automate farmland assessment for property taxation? I would appreciate any leads you can provide. Thank you. Stann
