Hi. I joined the list over the weekend. I wanted to introduce myself. I have little to contribute, technically speaking, but intend to follow the posting on this listserv to see what is going on in the field.
I begin a masters degree in geography in the Spring -- I'm learning Java this Fall before I enter the formal program.
I've been out of school since 1989, when I graduated college with a liberal arts degree. I've worked in politics (prowling around the US Congress and NY State legislature mostly) and as a writer of various dry policy-wonk type things. I've developed and used huge databases in my work.
I've always loved maps and geography. My work over the past 12 years has convinced me of the power of the visual display of information and, in particular, GIS.
I have prepared myself (got rid of debt, etc) for an extended period of learning. Geography and GIS is what I am going to pursue.
Since I have nothing technical to contribute, this post is probably all I will send to this listerv. Maybe in a few years time, I'll be able to add something of value. In any event, I'm here, I'm reading all the posts, and my name is Derek. I'm in New York City. Hello.
