Subject: GISList: Sources of Free Canadian Data Sets
Date:  09/05/2001 07:57:33 PM
From:  A P

I am working on developing a thesis topic to complete my undergraduate
studies but part of my decision on what topic to pursue will depend on the
data that I can easily access.

I am thinking of doing something related to retail analysis or marketing or
social services (i.e. education, hospital, recreation services).

Is anyone aware on sites where I can access good, free datasets that
describe for instance not only the location but also attributes. For
example, if I did something on education services such as elementary schools
information on how many students are enrolled in each school, what is the
maximum capacity , a sense of change over time, number of teachers example.
In terms of retailing, attributes such as store size, sales, number of
employees.

I would be planning on doing an analysis such as thiessen polygons, trade
area analysis and other geographic techniques depending on the topic and
what I focus on but I wanted to know if anyone is aware of datasets that
might be useful that I may not be aware of.

I would have census data available at my university for analysis purposes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I decide on a topic to focus
on.

Thanks!
