Elizabeth, I had kept this similar message SUM from the ArcView-L from April. My vote for a fast, crisp, images, networked 11x17 printer is the HP 2500 CM.
Sincerely, Bob Heselton

Thanks to the overwhelming response, to date I have received 15 replies, one of which was a summary including 13 replies. I expect more will be coming.
I am not going to include each reply, but summarize what is in them.
Printers:
COLOR PRO GA - Mixed results so far, $2500 cdn - not recommended at this time. HP2500C - $1600 us, Cartridges $35-40 - Most replies on this one. Buy the max ram (72Mb), PLC3 driver and JetDirect option if you can! Print quality is good. Like most Inkjets, it's slow. Some have had paper feed problems. "I haven't seen anything that prints photo's on high quality paper as well at the 2500" EPSON Stylus 1520 - "Best $500 I've spent in a long time!" - Prints up to C size @ 1440 dpi. Cartridges are cheaper that HP. Has network card option. EPSON 3000 - $1500 us, Cartridges $250/set - 17" wide (C size), roll feed option. Slow, but faster than HP. Unit is cumbersome. Great imaging features. Has problems with loading 13x19. EPSON Stylus 1160 - $300 us. Networkable? HP 1220 (1000, 1120) - $500 us ($900 with all options) - Up to 13x19. Good print quality and reasonable speed. No network support, external JetDirect box required. HP ColorPro CAD - $2000 cdn? - 19x13, 3 paper trays and has built-in buffer memory. happy with the performance and quality, although it is fairly slow when plotting images.
Scanners - Only 2 comments:
Epson 1640XL - $2200 us? - 11x17 - recent purchase, time will tell AGFA - $120 - 8-1/2x14 - no performance comments.

Greetings list,
I am looking for a color printer for maps that vary in size from 8 1/2 x 11 to about the size of a quad sheet. Most of the maps would be normal page size to 11 x 17..
The information on these maps would sometimes include the topo tiff image as a background with various property boundaries as a layer. So far the little inkjet printer can chug a map out in about 5 minutes, but if there are too many quads in the layout the printer can't handle it and freezes.
I need to know what criteria I should be looking for in a printer. I am responsible primarily for marketing and informational materials, and maps for real estate transactions (packages) at the moment. Some maps (especially ones for certified wood properties or in Park areas) have a lot of layers.
I want the maps to look good, and the color to be close to what I have on the screen. Speed is somewhat of an issue.
Please advise.
Thank you
Elizabeth
