Subject: Re: GISList: Cautions in using current DEMs for analysis on past situations ?

Andrea -

Although I'm no geomorphologist, my feeling is that you should allow for
erosion and deposition. I read an article some years ago (I think in
'Scientific American', but I'm not sure) about the effects of Bronze Age
farming techniques on the Greek landscape. Apparently, poor landcare
techniques over centuries (and several waves of settlement) caused farmed
slopes to slump, and end up in the valley below.

Regards,
David

Hi,

I was trying to clarify to myself the picture on possible issues in
using data concerning the present situation for analysis of situations
concerning the distant past.

I.e., if I want to perform visibility analysis or drainage analysis with
a DEM, concerning archaeological studies related to 5000 years ago,
should I introduce corrections reflecting erosion/deposition processes
or similar things, or is the effect of the related processes neglectable
over such a time frame ?

TIA for any feedback,
