Subject: Re: GISList: Ruggedised Case for iPAQ.
Date:  09/27/2001 08:10:36 AM
From:  Rodrigo MQ

Hi John ,

We have interest in this. Unfortunatelly I do not have any other suggestions
to give you, but I would like to know the possible solutions you may find.
We think that iPAQ is a great product and I believe the second choice would
be ours : " 2. completely reengineering the case, with room for compact
flash and wireless".

Other then Wireless, what would maybe interesting would be the already
existing possibilities to expand memory, the 1Gbyte disk and the possibility
to connect it into the light of the car and get some extra power supply.

I you have any other hint about it I would like to know.

Rodrigo

> List,
> I need some help before I spend my hard won dollars on a "dog"
(Unsuccesfull product).
> Is there a need for a ruggedised case for the iPAQ?
> I don't mean a protective sleeve for the existing product. I mean a
professionally engineered ruggedised design that is completely waterproof
,dustproof with high quality connectors for GPS use with ArcPad. Would
anyone be interested in purchasing a unit if it was available?
> I have a first generation case designed around Aero PCB which has been a
success in our GIS market but it is not a pretty product.
> I am contemplating 2 designs.
> 1. just embed the iPAQ in a protective shell.
> 2. completely reengineering the case, with room for compact flash and
wireless.
> What would you buy?
> What accessories i.e. Compact Flash, Wireless integration would be
essential for a Professional GIS field personnel.
>
> I know there are products such as the Trimble, TFC1 Allegro Ranger etc,
but these are far too expensive and are behind in design of the iPAQ which
is driven by the mass market and is further ahead in innovations. Besides
Trimble is now promoting their new software using the iPAQ.
