Subject: Re: GISList: Ruggedised Case for iPAQ.
Date:  09/27/2001 10:33:19 AM
From:  Rodrigo MQ

Thanks Heath,

That is good to know. Actually, we are using Autodesk On site to put maps on
iPAQ.

I will check that and see if they have something for Autodesk products.

I am working in the Energy industry as well.

We also have the demand to put some small database in it. The expandible
memory would give more autonomy to the field worker.

Perhaps he/she could just exchange the updated information with the
enterprise database.

Thanks once more.

Rodrigo

Hi List,

I just started following this thread on the last two notes, but one
thing that was mentioned in Rodrigo's mail was addressing the increase
of memory. If you are using shapefiles or MapInfo files there is a map
compression technology that reduces GIS vector files by up to 95% in
some cases, which could dramatically increase the use of the current
memory.

I am doing some consulting work in the energy industry and we are
evaluating the tool right now. Its called iMAP and its by a company
call apex systems. Their site is apex-sys.com if you are interested in
taking a look. Good luck!

Heath

Hi John ,

We have interest in this. Unfortunatelly I do not have any other
suggestions
to give you, but I would like to know the possible solutions you may
find.
We think that iPAQ is a great product and I believe the second choice
would
be ours : " 2. completely reengineering the case, with room for compact
flash and wireless".

Other then Wireless, what would maybe interesting would be the already
existing possibilities to expand memory, the 1Gbyte disk and the
possibility
to connect it into the light of the car and get some extra power supply.

I you have any other hint about it I would like to know.

Rodrigo

anyone be interested in purchasing a unit if it was available?

essential for a Professional GIS field personnel.

etc,
but these are far too expensive and are behind in design of the iPAQ
which
is driven by the mass market and is further ahead in innovations.
Besides
Trimble is now promoting their new software using the iPAQ.
