Subject: RE: GISList: Pie In The Sky GIS Laptop
Date:  09/27/2001 05:32:26 PM
From:  Mehdi Syed

I have a Dell Inspiron 3700 with 466 MHz Celeron process Laptop. 14.1"
screen. I am running following on it for months now with no problems or
minor.
Windows 2K Advanced Server.
IIS 5
MS Office XP
MS VS 6
ArcGIS DeskTop, Workstation, ArcSDE, MS SQL 2000, ArcPAD and ArcIMS 3.1
I also had an evalution copy of GM WebMap on it! Plus a number of my own
small free downloads like MSN messenger :-)

It has a 20GB Hard Drv and 256 MB RAM. I suggest you configure 512MB of
RAM plus a Compaq Aero 2100 with ArcPAD 6 beta setup!

I am a happy user and living a decent day.
However Remember
1- My system is a development, training and learning machine for me. I
also do all my office correspondence from the same system.
2- Use Norton GOST for a complete backup of your system
3- Use Norton or McAfee AntiVirus Utilities and keep them up-to-date
4- Create a separate partition for your project data. It's a time tested
and very safe strategy.
5-You must be able to understand and rectify small hw or sw problems
yourself. It requires some common sense and some background knowledge of
HW and SW. I believe 95% of the problems are related to SW itself and
its configuration. 4% are hardware and most of the time comes built-in
from manufacture.

I would love to have a more powerful machine, but I am OK with what I
have for now. I will go with the largest screen size, Video Ram, hard
drive and RAM available in the market. If you are looking for the best
it would be well over $4000. Mine may be less than $1200 now.

I also have a second hard drive that I switch when I have time. It has
Windows Code Whistler XP Beta 2 with .NET on it. I may be crazy :-)

Hope my comments were encouraging :-)

Good Luck with your shopping and have fun!

Okay everyone, here's your chance to make me drool.
I'm in the market for an IDEAL laptop setup that will
be used to run ArcView, ArcInfo, ERDAS Imagine, etc. I
want a powerhouse- but I realize the limitations of
laptops. I'd like you to give me your best list of
specifications as if money were no object (truthfully
though, my limit is ~$4,000). Most importantly, what
video card options do I have with a laptop, what about
RAM? It seems that most of the laptops only upgrade to
516 megs.....maybe I'm a meg snob, but I'd really like
to go higher!
Okay, I hope all of you will help me out here- I know
that your input will prove quite valuable.

Thanks in advance
David La Puma
