Subject: GISList: Pen Tablets vs. PDAs
Date:  10/01/2001 08:11:11 AM
From:  Heselton Bob R Civ 4 CES/CEV

GIS List,
Is it just me or does anyone else think that PDAs are way overrated compared
to Pen Tablets for GIS/GPS field work? We had a contractor do some field
work for us that used a Pen Tablet with their custom MapObjects application
to collect field data that worked great: it was fast and efficient. PDAs
that I have seen so far (from a different contractor and some demos) were
slow and expensive for GIS/GPS field work. Pen Tablets are between the size
of a PDA and a laptop but have a pen and touch screen like a PDA and no
built-in keyboard (you need an external keyboard for office work). I
checked on the web today and the hardware/software you can get with a
Fujitsu Pen Tablet is: Windows 98/NT/2000 and 400-600 MHz PIII/Celeron
processor, 64-256 MB RAM, 6-15 GB hard drive, built-in Ethernet and 56K
modem. The Fujitsus were priced in the $3,000 to $5,000 range when I last
inquired in March. You can run ArcView or other Windows GIS software on one
and not have to deal with Windows CE or Palm OS hardware/software
compatibility issues. I think people may be spending that or more on some
PDAs that do a lot less. Of course the tradeoff is that the Pen Tablets are
larger and heavier than a PDA. What does everyone else think? Is anyone
out there using a Pen Tablet for GIS/GPS field work? Does anyone have
experience with brands other than Fujitsu?
