From:  Hylan L Beydler

Cynthia,

You may be interested in taking a look at what the Census Bureau is
offering in the way of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). They are a n=
ew
statistical entity developed by the U.S.Census Bureau for tabulating
summary statistics from Census 2000.

Although ZCTAs are not U.S. Postal Service ZIP Codes, they are generali=
zed
area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service are=
as.
They represent either USPS five or three-digit ZIP Code areas. ZCTAs a=
re
offered in Arc/INFO Export (.e00), ArcView Shapefile (.shp) and Arc/INF=
O
Ungenerate (ASCII) format. They appear to compliment Census data.

...and drilling down closer to the data...

I've only downloaded and looked at the Missouri data and haven't yet ha=
d
opportunity for practical application.
