Subject: Re: GISList: zip codes
Date:  10/11/2001 04:39:05 PM
From:  John Callahan

Cynthia,

You can download the 3-digit and 5-digit ZCTAs from the Census Bureau's
web site for free. You can get the raw TIGER/Line data from
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tiger2k/tgr2000.html. This data is
in TIGER format and you will need some package to read it. You can also
get this data as Cartographic Boundary Files, which are
generalized/processed TIGER files, from
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/bdy_files.html, in ArcView, ArcInfo,
and ASCII formats. For many purposes, the Cartographic Boundary
versions will be fine.

Most ESRI products, when purchased, come with a 7 CD set of US and World
data. On those CDs is the actual postal 3-digit and 5-digit zip codes
for the country. I do not know the date they were created or how
accurate they are but they work well for most maps I make in DE/PA/NJ.

You can purchase the zip code dataset from GDT, at
http://www.geographic.com/home/prodservdisplay.cfm?ProdId=17&IndID=11.

God luck!
