Subject: GISList: Re: Importing DEM into Arcview3.2
Date:  10/15/2001 02:14:38 PM
From:  Elizabeth McCartney

Hello Zhou,

Please check the following (from George Miller):

1) Be sure to un-compress/untar the SDTS transfer in their own director=
ies.
2) If you use WinZip, make sure the Options/Configuration/Miscellaneous=

"TAR file smart CR/LF conversion"
box is NOT checked..
3) The extension "SDTS Grid Import" does not work.
4) Use the Start/Programs/ESRI/ArcViewGIS32/SDTS Raster to Grid option
....but:
ArcView 3.2 does not recognize the new SDTS DEMs as a valid SDTS Transf=
er.
You will need to edit
the xxxIDEN.DDF ....

Example: (Make a backup copy first!)
Edit with Wordpad:
xxxxIDEN.DDF before edit:
STANDARD=1F1998 JUNE 9=1FANSI NCITS 320-1998=1FSRPE: SDTS RASTER PROFIL=
E and
EXTENSIONS=1FFederal

xxxxIDEN.DDF after edit (note ...6 spaces at the end of ...EXTENSONS):
STANDARD=1F1998 JUNE 9=1FANSI NCITS 320-1998=1FSDTS RASTER PROFILE and =
EXTENSIONS
=1FFederal

The SDTS Raster to Grid Utility should now recognize the SDTS DEM.

NOTE: If you fat finger the edit, the SDTS Raster to Grid Utility ot
Toolbox will not recognize the SDTS DEM.... so start over...
delete the xxxxIDEN.DDF and copy the backup file to
xxxxIDEN.DDF .......

or.....
You can convert the SDTS DEM to a pseudo dem using the new sdts2dem.exe=
at:
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/topovista/sdts2dem.html
Then use the ArcView File/Import Data Source USGS DEM on the pseudo =
dem
created via sdts2dem.exe.
or the ArcInfo DEMLATTICE command.....

Let me know if this answered your problem.

If you continue to have problems, please email the name of the county y=
ou
are having problems with.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth McCartney

Subject: GISList: help for=

importing DEM into
10/12/2001 Arcview3.2

10:59 AM

Hi all,

After I edited the xxxxIDEN.DDF of the new formatted DEM by typing "SDT=
S
RASTER PROFILE", I translated it with SDTS2DEM to get a ****.DEM file.
Then, I imported this file into ArcView3.2 and output a new grid file. =
The
problem is it could not be displayed and a "Segment violation" massage
appeared. Did I miss something?

It is really emergency. I appreciate any hint.

Zhou
