Hello, for GML translation, it can be interesting to noticed that there is a GML 2 read/write support available with Safe's FME® and FME® Objects solutions. http://www.safe.com/press/gml2solution.htm
I am only at the beginning of my knowledge in GML, but it seems to be a promising format for geodata : an open standard XML format and a common denominator format for geodata exchange. Text-based, it is human-readable. XML-oriented, it takes benefit of all recent XML technologies. There are many things to say about this format.
