Listers,
We have received a number of constructive comments since launching the interactive Afghanistan web mapping site earlier this month, and have made some additions to both data content and web accessibility options. Hopefully these additions will enhance your and other users' experiences with the site.
Here's the low-down on what's new:
- Expanded geographic area to include Pakistan and parts of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Tajikistan, and India that adjoin Afghanistan and/or Pakistan.
- Additional vector data such as airfields, roads, rivers, populated places, administrative boundaries (states and/or counties), and country boundaries (including international boundary, cease-fire line, claim line, and defacto boundary) all taken directly from NIMA VMAP0.
- Vector download...all of the above data layers can be easily downloaded as shape files via our "clip and ship" feature built into the Maplicity interface under the "File" pull down menu.
- Custom image processing and image download via the Maplicity "Imagery" pull down menu, or Maplicity OpenApplet "Image Effects" menu.
- We made the site much more easily accessible for everyone with the data being made available in all three of the Maplicity viewers (for ESRI's ArcIMS) depending on a user's hardware/software/connectivity and their level of GIS expertise. There are now three options: MaplicityHTML doesn't require the Java plug-in, so is an option for low bandwidth or older browsers, but doesn't have nearly the functionality and interactivity of the Java-based Maplicity viewers. Maplicity OpenApplet is a less GIS-centric, more user friendly interface and sort of intro to on-line GIS (this is the viewer we originally deployed for the Afghanistan site when launched Nov. 2). The full-blown Maplicity interface is for the GIS professional, and provides all the tools that are familiar to desktop GIS users (FYI all three of these viewer's are included in a web server license, so our customers can provide any and/or all of these options to best meet the needs of their users)

We would like to include additional data that might be of interest to visitors to the site, so if any of you have data to contribute please contact us. We do not have resources to purchase data, but would be pleased to add a URL link for data contributors.
As always, constructive comments and suggestions are welcome.
Best regards, and have a great GIS Day!
Todd
