Subject: RE: GISList: All these annoying "Out of office" messages
Date:  11/21/2001 09:09:46 AM
From:  Anthony Quartararo

This is not the first time this issue has come up. Just like I have been
bonked for sending the list "read receipts" from time to time, I am sure
people forget, and likely don't even realize they have the "out of office"
reply function activated.

But, for those of you running Outlook/Outlook Express, you can choose not to
activate this function when you step out of the office, either for an hour
or a month or whatever. Personally I can't really understand why someone
would use it in the first place, because if someone does not respond with a
reasonable amount of time to an email I send, I presume they are "out of the
office" and will get back to me, if at all, when time permits. Furthermore,
if you insist on using this infamous "out of office" reply, with a little
non-programming effort, you can create a "rule" in Outlook/OE that does NOT
send an "out of office" reply to this list or any other. For those of you
using something else, I am sure there is a similar "disable" function too.
Use it. please.

If "you" can figure out the algorithms for various geographic datums and
projections, acre-feet of annual runoff in some Himalayan watershed or why
Kmart chose "your" neighborhood to open the newest SuperKmart, surely the
users of this list can determine how NOT to send "out of office" replies
without going to the extent of having to "unsubscribe" every time you leave
the office.

Exactly...
People, when you go away for holidays, please consider unsubbing then
getting back on the list when you return.
Your mail server will love you for it and it will make life easier when you
return as well!
What Bill is refering to are those really bothersome messages that tell us
that you are out of the office (and really... who actually gives a ^#$%*).
When I or anyone else sends a message to the GISList, your auto reply sends
a message back to the poster telling them you are a way. Now if 75 people
have done this you can see how annoying this can be.
