Subject: GISList: RFI: The best handheld GPS for the job
Date:  11/25/2001 10:44:41 PM
From:  David LaPuma

Thanks to everyone who provided information on my last
request (see archives of subject: “getting creative in
the field”). Your opinions and recommendations have
really helped me conceptualize a good system for the
field. Now I have a second request:

I’m hiring three field technicians for my project, and
need to get three handheld GPS units. I was really
surprised, when I finally used a Garmin III+, at how
different these are from the more “survey oriented”
devices produced by Trimble, etc. I’ve gotten over the
initial shock, and the fact that our budget will only
allow <$500 / unit, and now have to decide which one I
will choose to purchase. Through my extensive search,
I’m currently leaning towards either the Garmin eTrex
Vista, Garmin GPSMap76, or the Garmin GPS V (in that
order). I’m not too keen on the GPS V, mostly because
of its awkward shape and emphasis on road-oriented
configuration. I’ll be in remote locations with no
basemap coverage, or (~10% of the time) on the bay,
off the coast of South Florida. For this reason, the
GPSMap 76 seems like a good choice give its marine
emphasis. The most important features are accuracy and
portability, with the ability to record comments
associated with the waypoints of great interest. I’m
also in no way committed to Garmin, so feel free to
steer me astray!

*I know this is more GPS related than GIS, but you’re
the most helpful group I’ve found so far!

cheers

David
