Hello Jason,
Thank you for your inquiry. The single .tar.gz file contains the SDTS
version of the four .opt.gz files. The .opt.gz files are DLGs in the
native (optional) format. If your software does not show the datum you can
use the search capabilities of Earth Explorer (
http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov ) to find datum information or you can
download our free viewer from
http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/viewers
The viewer is particularly handy because you can check datasets quickly for
possible problems. A commercial version of the viewer is available from
http://www.globalmapper.com/

I have not been able to figure out or find information
on what the additional *.gz files are that you can
download with 100K hypsography DLG files.
Example: I'm downloading 100K hypsography data from
geocomm for Jefferson County in Colorado. The data is
contained in a file called DN3.HYPSO.SDTS.TAR.GZ.
There are also four other files available for
download: DN3.HPF03.OPT.GZ, DN3.HPF04.OPT.GZ,
DN3.HPF07.OPT.GZ and DN3.HPF08.OPT.GZ.
What are these for?

P.S. does anyone know what datum these file use or how
I can tell?
