Subject: GISList: Revised List sanitizer now in place
Date:  12/07/2001 10:34:42 AM
From:  Glenn Letham

Hello list,
in an effort to address some virus issues that have come up recently we have
made some changes to the list mail services.
Normally the lists don't accept attachments, however, the recent strain of
viruses have found some MS security breaches which have apparently breached
the security measures.

To avoid additional complaints on viruses coming through our mail
services, we have implemented a basic mail "sanitizer/defanger" on all
mail processed through the GISList (and all other lists that we host). This
sanitizer successfully blocks the latest
"Win32.Badtrans" virus, as well as in general blocking any potentially
harmful attachments.

The sanitizer will immediately block (remove) any attachment that has a
filename or extension of:
winmail.dat
.exe
.vbe
.vbs
.com
.chm
.bat
.pif
.sys
.scr
.gz
.bz2

All of these could possibly be interpreted by the mailer and/or Windows
system and executed. Furthermore, HTML-based email will be modified
slightly ("defanged") to not allow certain things like IFRAMES, CID,
META TAGS, etc., that could also possibly force a virus/worm to infect
the system.

Please note that this will happen on *ALL* messages sent to our internal
mail server. If someone needs to send you a file that is one of the
above extensions, have them send it as a zip file.

Furthermore, it is always best to have a uptodate anti-virus program in
place and please practice "safe" email procedures.
