Hi,
I just wanted to add a few points of clarification on the posting about the population datasets. There are two: Landscan and Gridded Population of the World (GPW version 2).
Landscan is a set of grids that estimate population for 30 arc-second grid cells based on a series of inputs (administrative population, slope, land cover, night light intensity, and road density). Landscan was produced by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and is distributed by CIESIN at:
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/gpw/landscan/
Oak Ridge has a page describing the project at:
http://www.ornl.gov/gist/projects/LandScan/SIMPLE/smaps.htm
CIESIN had no part in creating the Landscan dataset, we just distribute it for Oak Ridge.
Gridded Population of the World (GPW), version 2, is a set of grids which estimate population, land area and population density based soley on administrative population data. GPW, version 2, was produced by CIESIN and is a new version of what used to be known as the 'Global Demography Project' or GPW. The grids are at a resolution of 2.5 arc-minutes. These data are available via:
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/gpw/
We consider these two datasets complimentary, there is a web page that compares the two so that you can decide which is most appropriate for your use, see:
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/gpw/landscan/specs.html
Finally, there is a list of other data that CIESIN distributes at:
http://www.ciesin.columbia.edu/download_data.html
You should be aware that I do work for CIESIN. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Greg

| New global population density dataset: | | As a user of the old CIESIN/ORNL Gridded Population of the World 1995 (GPW), I just stumbled upon a new similar dataset, by the same people -- Landscan 2000. | | | This dataset is population density in approx. 1x1 km mapping units, mapped and assessed using Census data, land cover, elevation, roads and nighttime lights/satellite imagery. | | Earlier global population data (such as GPW) had a patchiness in some places after the mapping units, after administrative boundaries. This new dataset avoids that, using a more continous way of data collection. | | It states on the download page, in the readme, that the dataset is up for review, and should be considered pre-release quality -- but it still seems pretty good (not much competition though). | | (Please note that I don't have any affiliation with CIESIN or ORNL) | | // Hugo Ahlenius | | | ------------------------------------------------------------- | Hugo Ahlenius E-Mail: hugo@grida.no | Project Officer Phone: +47 3703 5713 | UNEP GRID-Arendal Fax: +47 3703 5050 | Service box 706, N-4808 Arendal Mobile: +47 9964 7071 | Norway WWW: http://www.grida.no | ----------------------------------------------------
