Subject: GISList: Suggestions on land cover/vegitation
Date:  12/07/2001 10:34:43 AM
From:  Jason Lampitt

Hello to both lists.

This is nearly a duplicate subject from one of my
previous postings only this time I'll try to be
frightfully specific about what I'm trying to
accomplish.

First off, if you don't know already, I make trail
maps. For past versions of my maps I've just used USGS
24K quads and overlaid my trail data, made a few
cosmetic adjustments and printed the product.

Personally I don't like the final product anymore and
with all the available data I think I could produce a
much better map.

I've pretty much got all my ducks in a row with
exception to land cover/vegetation representation.

USGS vegetation DLG's are sparse, somewhat out of date
and haven't been produced in the last few years
according to a contact at USGS.

NLCD files are HUGE and I'm still learning how to work
with them and since the file itself covers and entire
state I'm not sure if the resolution of the file will
warrant using it for trail maps with a scale somewhere
between 1:40,000 and 1:24,000.

I know there's lots of data out there and all kinds of
formats so I don't really need suggestions on where to
get data, it's more like I need suggestions on what's
best to use to give a clearer representation of land
cover/vegetation for large scales. I'm lost in a sea
of data.

I appreciate each lists' patience with my questions.
Everyone has been more than helpful.

To slightly contradict myself, if you have a good
suggestion for my plight which includes where to get
the data then by all means please let me know.

Jason Lampitt
