Subject: Re: GISList: Wow! SDTS Data overload...
Date:  12/23/2001 09:22:52 PM
From:  Jason Lampitt

Hi Van,

Nearly all the data I've downloaded has come directly
from the USGS at the following URL.

http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/doc/edchome/ndcdb/ndcdb.html

Not only is it free but it's also a much faster
download and I can verify the creation date of each
data layer before I download it.

Since I've only used Manifold I don't know how the
same data appears in other applications with exception
to MicroDEM. However, to my knowledge I couldn't
access all the data in MicroDEM that I can using
Manifold. At least not in the same simplistic manner
of selecting an area, line or point and right clicking
to access the table.

Also, as a personal disclaimer, I'm not a
"professional" GIS guy (not yet anyway) so I can't
necessarily vouch for the accuracy that some folks may
require from their GIS data. I use fairly primitive
means to "verify" that the data I download is accurate
enough for use in my projects which don't include any
kind of analysis, data mining, etc.

I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on feedback
received regarding interpretation of the data if it
doesn't get posted to both lists.

=)
