Subject: GISList: Reparing shapefile with lost .DBF
Date:  12/23/2001 09:22:52 PM
From:  ðÅÔÒ ûÁÒÙÊ

Dear list,

Jamie Uff asked how to restore shapefile (.SHP, .SHX, and .DBF files) graphics
with lost or corrupted .DBF. This can be done WITH NO PROGRAMMING. I reply
directly to the list, since this might appear of value for people who use ANY
SOFTWARE that understands shapefile standard described in ESRI Shapefile
Technical Description (An ESRI White Paper - July 1998).

You are to enter one column in Microsoft Excel that consists of some word in
top cell (say, MY_FIELD) and number 1 in each other cell. The number of cells
that contain "1" must be (L-100)/8, where L is .SHX file length (in bytes).
Then save this as dBASE 4 file .DBF with the same filename as your .SHP and
.SHX. Your shapefile is now ready for use. It will display graphics, but your
database will contain only one field MY_FIELD (and 1 in each record).

Subject: GISList: Shape Fles into Geomedia

Dear List,

I wish to load some arcview shape files into geomedia 4. However these
shape files do not have any corresponding dbf to make a connection to, all i
have is .shp and ssx.

Any ideas of how i can get this data to display would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Jamie Uff
