Subject: Re: GISList: Shapefile to DXF attribute loss
Date:  01/03/2002 02:47:32 PM
From:  David Irving

Ayo -

My recollection (misty after several years) of DXF (Drawing eXchange
Format) files is that they are for moving drawings from one CAD system
to another. I don't recall there being any space for attributes (other
than things like lineweight and layer number) in them. If you have the
data as Shapefiles, why do you need to convert them to DXF anyway? If
you need to move them from ArcView to some other GIS you'd be better off
with one of the many fine conversion utilities available (some free)
which do it directly. If, on the other hand, you want to use your data
in AutoCad, you don't really need (and probably can't really use) the
attributes anyway - CAD systems are notoriously bad at dealing with
attributes.

Regards,
David
