Hello List (and John and Ian),
I know either Statistics Canada and/or Elections Canada uses block faces to decide their geographic boundaries. I am not sure, however, how the database is divided (by FSAs or 6-digit postal codes or whatever). But I do know that MapInfo/Compusearch has a Landuse layer (which differentiates between a number of landuses including: Government Institutions, Industrial, Residential Sectors, and Retail/Commercial). Perhaps combining these two layers would be the way to go. I have no idea how much it would cost to purchase these data layers, but I'm pretty sure it would not be cheap.

Hi John,
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't believe such a beast exists. I've never run across a Canadian wide property (building) database that differentiates buildings by classifications of commercial/residential and that is grouped by FSA (or postal codes) areas. You'll have to roll up your sleeves I think.
Good luck.
PS. When you complete it, I'd like a copy :o)

Dear All,
I am looking for a Canadian data set that consisists of the number of buildings in each zip code county or state. The buildings preferably should be split commercial and residential.
Does any one have any ideas if this exists and where i may be able to obtain it. I've tried several data providers but with little luck.
Thanks for your time. John
