Subject: Re: GISList: DRGs?
Date:  01/11/2002 08:44:20 AM
From:  Glenn Letham

Hello Travis,
sorry but I have to pipe up regarding your totally naive statement regarding
our supposed "monopolization of DRGs". To set things straight, The
GISDataDepot (and Topozone for that matter) are under no obligation or have
no mandate to serve up DRGs for free to to you... we do so as a service to
the GIS Community. Perhaps the level of service doesn't meet with your
needs, however, keep in mind that we provide the T1 lines, the back office
support, the endless stream of questions and support questions (like how do
I open a TIF file, how do I uncompress a .tar file etc...) and will gladly
provide you or anyone else with options for obtaining the data from other
resources.

True, we offer a tiered level of service, being free download, faster
premium download service, or even a CD write service, but keep in mind we
are fully supported by the USGS and work closely with them to ease the
burden on them to make this data available. Once again, we are not a
not-for-profit Org, nor are we a government agency under mandate to provide
this data to you. The situation with the DEMs may be slightly different but
as far as DRGs go, if we so chose, we could yank the plug tomorrow if we
like (don't woory, that won't happen).

As for other options, try using our search engine at
http://search.geocomm.com, look at some of the State spotlights I've listed
at http://data.geocomm.com/datafeature/ or even send us a polite request for
assistance finding other data providers, we'll be glad to help with your
search.

Regards
Glenn
