Ah, the joys of the public land survey system. I've run into an odd conundrum, and I'm wondering if any of you have experience in something similar.
Many legal descriptions of federally administered land parcels are described using PLSS, in township, range, and section language. For example, say I have an area whose legal description is "T16N R18W Sec. 33 SW/4SE/4SE/4" which can be translated as "the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 33, range 18 west, township 16 north." Of course, I have the PLSS down to the section for the area of interest, but I've never seen it broken down further in any type of coverage or on any map. So how do I convert that legal description into digital format?
Another wrench in the works is that sections are seldom regularly shaped: although they're supposed to be 40 acres, they're usually oddly-sized quadrilaterals (since the original surveyors were trying to account for the curvature of the earth). So how are they subdivided? If I were to cut a section into 20 acre rectangular east/west halves, and the sides of the section were like so: / /, would the division line be parallel or oriented towards north (straight up and down)?
If you can offer any thoughts or shared experience on the matter, I'll be deeply grateful! Thanks in advance, Heather
