I believe you need to define "commercially." True ESRI and Intergraph were founded in 1969 and the CGIS was in existence and ELAS was available from NASA, but are you referring to commercially available software that is shrink wrapped? When was GRASS first available from the Corps of Engineers?

What was the first year GIS was commercially available in the US? I am thinking it was 1987 or 1988. How far off am I?
