Subject: GISList: Gis and zoning
Date:  02/13/2002 07:37:18 AM
From:  LOIS_DEAN .. HUD.GOV

Have a look at these zoning maps. Where thay have used PDF you can see
problems. The solution, creating one good, big, detailed map and saving it
in small sections in separate PDF files would have simplified the task -
you could select just the section you want and then download just that
section's file.

http://www.co.boulder.co.us/lu/gislu/zoning.html - this is
instructive both for what it does and for what it does not do.

http://cas1.ci.mobile.al.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=ZoningMap&Cmd=FULLEXTENT
- remarkable product - even shows parcels, and parcel data. Read
instructions well at top of map before navigating.

http://gis.ci.cambridge.ma.us/maplibrary/zoning.html and

http://gis.ci.cambridge.ma.us/pdfmaps/zone.pdf -
Cambridge, Massachusetts presents an elegant and probably
more cost effective solution than the Mobile Alabama one. It would
help to have the map key downloaded first, however. *

http://www.metrokc.gov/ddes/gis/zatlas-3.htm - using the
Adobe tools you can search this PDF document, or print it out. Not
as elegant as Cambridge's, but for a much larger area and it's all
there.

http://www.onetgov.net/dept/gmer/planning/GIS/zoning.pdf -
Another large area - the map resolution is less fine, and it may
not
be as practical as the other examples are.

http://www.twp.lancaster.pa.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=Lanc_twp&cmd=map
- This Lancaster County zoning map is definitely the best example
so far, with excellent links and good clear directions.
http://www.twp.lancaster.pa.us/ - the rest of the home
page/site is worth looking at while you are there. simple and well
done. *

http://www.city.sedona.net/cddept.htm - Sedona takes a very
different approach. Worth looking at for all the other kinds of
information services they provide on their site. *

http://www.co.brunswick.nc.us/gis3.asp - Brunswick displays
a number of maps, and also offers them for sale at $8.00.

http://www.ccgis.com/default.htm - Charlotte County, Florida
makes good use of GIS technology (the Applet map would not
start when I last visited the site).

. It's worth checking them all
out to glean the best from each. You can also use Google to
search for more examples- use "Zoning GIS" as your search
words.
