Hi,
Some nice answers and links..thanks to those who responded
Original question Does anybody have any information regarding zoning planning and GIS. Especially with regard to linking applications and reports to zoning planning and information. I've tried searching the knowledge base and I get a search error.
Answers Check out www.sagis.org - we (actually our consultants) are in the process of linking the zoning layer to zoning ordinance text descriptions. The site is currently going up & down while various upgrades are being done.

Check some of these links out to see what some communities have done to make zoning information available to the public using Geographic information systems and the Internet.
A number of these use PDF files to capture the information of a static map, and the viewer can use Adobe's tools to zoom in on the section of the map they are interested in.
An improvement to many of these PDF maps could be easily made by setting up a map key that you can click on to select the section of the map you want. This would permit the map to be saved in a number of smaller sections, having more precise detail, in PDF format.
If parcel data maps are available, overlaying the zoning on the parcel map can help to determine which properties are in and which are outside of the zoned area.
Communities owning copies of HUD's Community 2020 GIS mapping tool have all the GIS power they need to create these maps and post them up on their web site. Over 1000 entitlement communities were given Community 2020 GIS software by HUD.

http://www.co.boulder.co.us/lu/gislu/zoning.html - may be an example of what not to do
http://cas1.ci.mobile.al.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=ZoningMap&Cmd=FULLEXTEN T - remarkable product - even shows parcels, and parcel data. Read instructions well at top of map before navigating.
http://gis.ci.cambridge.ma.us/maplibrary/zoning.html, and
http://gis.ci.cambridge.ma.us/pdfmaps/zone.pdf - an elegant and probably more cost effective solution than the Mobile Alabama one. It would help to have the map key downloaded first, however. *
http://www.metrokc.gov/ddes/gis/zatlas-3.htm - using the Adobe tools you can search this pdf document, or print it out. Not as elegant as Cambridge's, but for a much larger area and it's all there.
http://www.onetgov.net/dept/gmer/planning/GIS/zoning.pdf - Another large area - the map resolution is less fine, and it may not be as practical as the other examples are.
http://www.twp.lancaster.pa.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=Lanc_twp&cmd=map - this County zoning map is definitely the best example so far, with excellent links and good clear directions. http://www.twp.lancaster.pa.us/ - the rest of the home page/site is worth looking at while you are there. simple and well done. *
http://www.city.sedona.net/cddept.htm - this community takes a very different approach. Worth looking at for all the other kinds of information services they provide on the site. *
http://www.co.brunswick.nc.us/gis3.asp - Brunswick displays a number of maps, and also offers them for sale at $8.00.
http://www.ccgis.com/default.htm - Charlotte County Florida makes good use of GIS technology. The Applet map would not start when I last visited the site.
What is most notable about this collection is the variability among them. The quality of the maps vary. The clarity of the message , ie how to get to the map and how use it, varies greatly. It's worth checking them all out to glean the best from each. You can also use Google to search for more - use Zoning GIs as your search words.
