Subject: GISList: TIP: "Whatcolor" (cross-posted)
Date:  02/13/2002 07:37:18 AM
From:  Bill Huber

Dear Lists,

I have found that the cheap Windows shareware "Whatcolor"
(http://www.hikarun.com/e/) helps immensely with GIS operations in several
ways:

1. On-screen digitizing, zooming, and point selection.
2. Magnification of on-screen features to show slivers, mis-registrations,
and so on.
3. Identifying and matching colors for cartographic output or dialog
development.
4. Close inspection of raster images without having to zoom in and out.

The most useful part of this software is a tiny window that magnifies the
screen directly beneath the cursor. With Whatcolor running to the side, I
can pinpoint individual pixels with the mouse at 1280 x 1024 screen resolution.

The other part of the software provides RGB codes and English names for the
color of the pixel at the mouse cursor. When I need to match an on-screen
color exactly, this is the ideal tool for picking it up.

Whatcolor will work alongside any program, including all GISes, CAD, and
image processing tools.

I am curious whether other inexpensive tools with these features exist and
how people might be using them. If I hear any responses of course I'll
summarize them.

BTW, this is not an ad or sales job. I have no connection whatsoever with
the fellow who is selling this software, apart from having ponied up eight
bucks for a full license.

Cheers,
Bill Huber
