Thanks Chris for including Glenn's comments addressed to me and ending with a PS to the list. Notice he didn't bother to send me a copy directly. I haven't even received one via the list yet. Strange.
=====================
Mr. Letham,
I have the day off and I thought I would spend some time exploring the GeoComm site. I could not escape the incessant flashing on the screen. I just left the site and posted my message hoping others would agree and get the site to back off a bit on the animation.
Obviously you have some very loyal supporters. I can't believe they actually enjoy those ads, but are just defending you. I guess I can agree with them in that I am thankful your site is not as bad as the worst out there.
Sorry that you took the post personally. I'll write off your poor manners to the ability email allows us to make fools of ourseleves on occasion by not givng us time to think before we flame away.
I'm sure if you sat back and thought a bit you would have replied to me in private to discuss what would prompt me to flame your site. Wouldn't that be valuable information? This isn't the kind of list that people just flame each other just to be nasty. That certainly wasn't my motivation - I do find the rapid animation truly annoying and said so. That's childish?
I noticed the site's unprofessional advertising behaviour for quite a while. The latest ad - something about FTP - was over the top. There is no excuse IMO for ads like that one. I know it caused me to leave the site before I was ready to.
No, Mr. Letham, it is you, not I, that needs an Econ 101 class. Or maybe one in Marketing or Advertising. You do not have the luxury of annoying many of your visitors and animation/flash does annoy a large segment of the Internet users.
I can believe that in small doses changing ad images can be succesful, even neccessary if you have a lot of material to display in a small space. Just slow down the animation! Yours isn't the kind of site that cannot hold visitors for long periods. You have a lot of useful information worth reading that I have discovered in the past. It is just that now the site is so offensive that I will only visit the site to grab some free data, minimzing the time I am exposed to the ads.
Certainly ads obviously designed to annoy actually work in some cases, but are you proud of them?
