Subject: GISList: more on GIS market metrics
Date:  02/13/2002 01:04:44 PM
From:  Carlos Lopez

Hello everybody:
I am interested in a particular area within GIS markets: the size of the raw data market.
It is a widely known/used rule of thumb that data collection accounts for over 80% of
the cost of a "typical" GIS project. However, despite common, this rule might be based
upon some historical data, which is almost surely outdated.
Hopefully, with Clearinghouses, data standards, metadata, etc. there are more chances for
a new GIS project to gather data from commercial/government sources without resorting to
collect raw data within the projects.
The question I might want to pose is: how big is the market for "canned" data? (like
digital satellite imagery, USGS DEM, administrative boundaries, etc? The question might
be partially answered if we know the updated "80%" rule.
Does someone know some source for this? It is commonplace to know information about
the software side (through Daratech-like reports) but is difficult to know the significance
of salaries, data collection and other (maybe minor) items in the budget.
I offer myself to collect the answers and submit a summary to the list. Hope that
Travis might offer a summary of the answers he collects, and maybe together we could be
able to bring to the community a more complete picture.
Regards
Carlos
