Subject: GISList: Locating ridgelines
Date:  02/26/2002 11:36:58 AM
From:  Ned Horning

Greetings,

I am trying to create a ridgeline dataset from a DEM and am looking for
alternative approaches to do this. I looked into defining watersheds but
that isn't as promising as I had hoped. Another approach I tried is to use
morphological operators to define ridges and peaks. I am using ENVI for this
and it is working quite well but the result is an image of ridge blobs and I
need to have the ridges defined as a lines. If I could apply an erode
operator, to the blob image, that would stop eroding before the blob is
eliminated that might work but I'm not sure how to implement this. I also
thought about looking into algorithms used to define centerlines in objects
but before I take that step I wanted to solicit some help from colleagues.

So, the question is: how do I define a ridgeline with a DEM as input?

Ned
