You don't say what sort of data sets you are interested in. The first stop
is probably the NIMA server at
http://164.214.2.59/geospatial/digital_products.htm (www.geocomm.com is
reprinting some of the VMAP stuff as well, I believe).
For imagery, try www.terraserver.com and NASA at
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/BlueMarble/
The Blue Marble imagery can be used to create some neat maps, like in
http://www.manifold.net/images/gallery/afghanistan_ortho.png (done with
Manifold 5.00,
