I posted this message a few days ago, thanks to those who responded both to the list and privately:
"I am looking for current or relatively current market research data on the imagery & photogrammetric services industry. I'm talking about some historical numbers on domestic (US) and international sales by category (satellite, aerial, products, services, mapping, etc.) as well as forecasts for the same over the next few years. I'm under the impression (reason for asking for real #s) that demand of all types, shapes and sizes is exceeding capacity (some say by magnitudes of difference). Also, any comments on latest and greatest technology, trends or breakthroughs would be of interest. Any resident experts, vendors or others out there with opinions, facts, etc. are invited to comment. Thanks."
To-date, I have received a few responses that were helpful:
Graeme Brooke provided this link: http://www.asprs.org/asprs/news/TRB_121201.ppt., good data Carlos Lopez mentioned an article in GIM International that states the global market is $4B (I have yet to read the article)
Most of the responses have been expressions of interest in any findings, and so what I can only conclude without additional research is that there is very little in the way of comprehensive research and analysis of this industry and it's respective "consumer" markets. I suppose there is an opportunity here, much like IDC, etc. publish reports periodically on the GIS industry, a firm could offer up a report on the imaging industry as well, and probably charge a fortune for it as well. IDC charges $6500 for the currrent "SIM" report (it's about 30 pp)... I know, I know...please don't ask...but nevertheless, they claim it is a best seller. I have to wonder whether the imagery industry, which from the limited information available makes the GIS industry look like a toddler, is not important enough to have a research product that is actually worth $6000+ ? Question is, what would a report be worth to people? It's a monumental task to do a top-quality job, perhaps someone has the contacts and resources to do the research and write it up. I'd probably buy it if they did. Anyway, thanks for the input and I will keep looking and post to the list if I come upon anything else noteworthy.
Best Regards,
Anthony Quartararo
