Subject: GISList: UK Ordnance Survey to withdraw 50m DEM data
Date:  03/06/2002 05:07:03 PM
From:  Kevin Woolley

I received a letter from the UK Ordnance Survey this morning informing me
that they are shortly going to withdraw their 1:50,000 scale (1 point per 50
metre) product. This is the UK equivalent of DEM data and is perfect for
modelling landscapes in terragen, bryce, genesisII, world construction set,
vue d'esprit, vistapro and other many other atristic and 3D GIS programs.

Their proposals for replacement are a height layer inside OS MasterMap - a
full featured but expensive commercial-orientated GIS product, Landform
PROFILE data - which is only available in much smaller tiles at 1 point per
10 metres, or the Meridian 2 entry level data - which is vector contours at
not at all compatible.

In other words the Ordnance Survey are about to withdraw the only suitable
data set available for modelling UK Landscapes in landscape visualization
products. 50 metre data is perfect for landscape modelling - the other
datasets are too small scale or too expensive for general use.

I would therefore urge everyone on this list who is either in the UK or
might wish to model landscapes with OS data to write and protest. Please
urge the OS to retain this data, and if possible to make this data available
for free from their website. This data was generated using public money and
should be placed in the public domain if no longer a viable commercial
product.

If the OS does remove this data then there will be virtually no opportunity
for anyone outside organisational GIS departments to model UK landscapes.
Also please spread this message as widely as possible to other interested
lists, groups and so forth.

Notification of withdrawal of Land-Form PANORAMA

I am writing to inform you of the withdrawal of our 1:50,000 scale height
product, Land Form PANORAMA from 1 April 2002

Why withdraw Land-Form PANORAMA?

Land-Form PANORAMA was launched in 1989 to fulfil the mapping element
requirements for basic height data. Although it was not withdrawn when
Land-Form PROFILE came to market, our intention was always to replace it
with a higher resolution product.

Land-Form PANORAMA has therefore served it's purpose and is now a very
mature product that is becoming out of data. By retiring it now, we are
able to redirect our efforts to supporting our 1:10,000 scale height product
Land-Form PROFILE and our plans for a height theme within OS MasterMap.

Land-Form PROFILE provides excellent value for money with recently reduced
prices for both national cover and regional sets. For entry level
customers, there is an alternative lower resolution option - height data
available in Meridian 2 (Topographic theme), which offers a 100m gridden
heights layer.
