Hello,
I saw on gislist@geocomm.com that the OS will be dropping its 1:50,000 scale (1 point per 50 metre) digital elevation data product. As you no doubt are aware this is a very useful data set for modelling the UK in a wide variety of GIS and 3D modelling packages.
I would urge you to continue providing the data set. If you don't want to sell it, please consider providing free public access to it and put it into the public domain so that users can continue to have access to it. I work for a GIS company, www.manifold.net, that would be pleased to host the data set for free downloads from our FTP servers as a public service to UK users. No doubt many other sites like www.geocomm.com (who provide free access to USGS SDTS DEMs) would also be willing to provide free FTP access to this data. So, please don't just throw this data set away or make it inaccessible. At least allow us and other companies or universities operating public access FTP sites to provide it to those who need this data set.
If you are not the person making the decision on this, please forward my letter to the right people.
Sincerely,
Dimitri Rotow Product Manager dar@manifold.net
