Subject: GISList: comprehensive list
Date:  03/08/2002 07:04:16 AM
From:  Anthony Quartararo

List,

Does anyone have an idea if there is a truly comprehensive, exhaustive list
that compiles and categorizes every company that works in the GIS industry?
I know that all the major portals, including GeoComm have a catalog, but it
is subject to them knowing about the portal and also submitting their
information so they can be listed in the catalog. I am curious if anyone
has gone out and done a thorough inventory and cataloging of all companies
around the world that are involved in the GIS industry? Not just ones on
the net either, but in every nook and cranny too. I suspect it hasn't been
done, and my what a list that would be. I'm interested because of some
research we are doing in looking at historical uptake of the GIS and looking
forward as well. The second, even more challenging part is getting a handle
on the global user base (meaning everyone from 5th graders to EVPs doing
market analysis). Software licensing is not an accurate measure of the user
base, and while I have seen various large numbers thrown around, there's
never been any backup for it.

Perhaps a more important question is, would those two "reports" be valuable?

Am I dreaming or am I just the last to know ?

Thanks

Anthony
ps. I remembered to cancel the rr this time folks.
