The end that I am trying to achieve is for a traffic volume project. At every intersection there are counts for N, S, E, W both entering and exiting the intersection. There are also a left and right turn counts for each of the NSEW legs. I want to display the traffic volume as points (arrows) but also as lines. The initial data will be stored as points and then I'll spatial join the point data of interest to my line segments as needed. This requires careful placement of the points relative to the lines, or the spatial join will get all screwed up. I set my points and turn lines around one intersection very carefully in order to simulate the effect that I want for all my intersections. Now I want to transfer the shape from this one intersection to the rest of them, so that I have all my geometry in place before I populate the database. In AutoCAD I'd create a block and snap it to the center point of the intersection and then explode it, but that would take a while for all of Salt Lake City. Instead I'll do this (unless anyone else has a better idea):
Get my intersection points (where one street centerline crosses another)
Copy intersection points to a new .shp
Add XY
Calculate X and Y to correspond with my desired offset (X + 10, Y + 10 gives me a new point offset that may be a northbound volume count leaving the intersection)
Iterate until all points are offset
Merge shps into one
Populate my database.
