Hello GIS List group members,
I am currently working on a metadata standards initiative. I have several questions and concerns that I am hoping the group can help me out with. I am currently working with ESRI's ArcCatalog to create metadata files for my spatial data. However, I am not following the FGDC standard, rather the province of Ontario standard, GT ITS 72.00. I have created a custom stylesheet tentatively to match the GT ITS 72.00 standard, based upon the FGDC xsl tags. The stylesheet works okay. However, I also would like to be able to edit these metadata files. I am aware of how to create a custom metadata editor - ESRI provides both a .dll and .exe sample editor. I was hoping that the "stand alone" .exe sample editor would be useful for individuals that do not have ESRI software installed. Unfortunately, I have tried this and the editor cannot find any data.....it requires active x component objects that are linked to ESRI.
Does anyone have a solution to my dilema????
Secondly, I would like to house my metadata files into a database. How can I go about doing this so that there is a link between the actual metadata files and the database. I want to be able to update the database and have the information applied to the metadata file so that the information is always current. Does anyone have any suggestions????
I have tried to create a geodatabase in ArcCatalog with 3-4 shapefiles. When I open the db in Access, several tables are created for the metadata, in particular GD_usermetadata. There is a field in this table entitled XML. According to ESRI information this field contains the entire xml metadata file for each spatial data set. However, these records in the xml field are all long binary data, in OLE object format, and are completely unusable for extraction etc. Has anyone encountered this situation? Is there anyway to get a more "useable" format of this information?
Thanks for all your time, I hope someone can help.
Thanks again,
Nicole
